Cornellà: students' report

Claudia Tricca

My experience in Spain was fantastic!!!
When I arrived in Cornellà and I met my "new" family I was very shy ,but immediately they made me feel like a daughter .The girl that hosted me, Lucìa was very friendly, funny, extrovert with me, so I was at ease with
her. During these days also her parents were friendly and polite, in fact they spoke with me and asked me a lot of things about my country.  Besides they bought some Spanish food for me and they wanted to learn some Italian words. Lucía is very intelligent, in fact she was the only girl in the Comenius group that learned a lot of Italian words.
I also visited a lot of monuments and beautiful places, so I decide to return to Barcelona sooner or later, because this city is really wonderful!!! When I had to leave my friends we were all very sad, but Lucía and the others girls promised that in summer they will come to Pescara.
Before this experience I was insecure, now I would repeat that 1000 times!!!

Benedetta Gaspari

Before leaving for Spain I was a little insecure because I didn't know my new friend's family and I never lived this type of experience. When I arrived in Cornellà I saw my friend and her mother, they were smiling and they soon hugged me. I was a bit scared because I didn't know how to communicate. My friend in fact can't speak good English and I can't speak Spanish, fortunately we found a way to understand each other. It was very funny! Their house was small but full of lights. I shared the room with the girl that hosted me. Our room was very colored and funny. Since the beginning I found my new friend very nice, all the members of the family were very friendly and caring. I visited a lot of monuments and I was enthusiastic. Unfortunately one day I felt sick because I had eaten too much.
In conclusion I liked very much this experience. I really hope the Spanish group will come to Italy next Summer.
My first cultural exchange was unforgettable!

On 3rd november we went to the Abruzzo airport at 1 pm. After the check-in, we took the plane at about three. When we arrived at the Girona airport, we took a bus which was directed to a station which is called Estación del norte. The trip was stressful and boring, especially because of the traffic.
However, after 2 hours we finally arrived at our destination. Spanish girls were waiting us anxiously at the station and we were recognized immediately. I met Iciar, her mother and her brother... We went to their house in Sant Feliu de Llobregat after 30 minutes because their house was far away to the station. I was tired but the family prepared for me kebab, pizza, a lot of cold cuts and salad with eggs and tuna. I couldn't believe that! The dinner was delicious. Later Iciar and I went to see some bars and places, for example the square. At 11 pm we came back home and we made a long conversation about us, to meet better each-other. After that we went to sleep. The first day was fantastic and I understood that week would have been wonderful.

Cornellà: third project meeting in Spain

 Sunday, 3rd of November

The third Comenius meeting for the H.I.P. project started on Sunday the 3rd of November.
We met at Pescara airport at 1:00 o’clock; the seven girls and the three teachers were almost punctual and we were very anxious to leave our land and to start the new experience.
For some of the students that was the first flight, they were a little nervous, but we had no problem at all. After having said goodbye to our relatives and friends, we did the check in. It is unconfortable to take off all our metal things like keys, belts and watches, but we had to do it.
The plane left Pescara while the sun was shining even if it was a little cloudy and it was amazing to see our town from the sky… the harbor, the stadium, Aurum Palace… they are completely different from above.
Approaching the Apennines the weather changed and it was very cloudy, so we could sleep.

As usual, the plane arrived some minutes earlier at Girona airport. We found our cases already there and we could leave the airport with the bus to Barcelona. The trip to Barcelona on the highway is not very interesting, but we all very excited because of our next experience. I had already sent some sms to Mario and he told me that Sonia would be at Estación del Norte to receive us with their students. While we were approaching I sent a couple more of sms and when we arrived, all the Spanish students and Sonia were there. The first meeting was impressive, we kissed as the Spanish way (I always have problem to remember that Spanish people start kissing from the left!) and we were all nervous because of the new situation, but happy to start it.

All the hosting girls were there, so we could leave our student in their warm embrace and leave the station to reach our hotel. Sonia was really very kind and she paid a taxi for us, so we didn’t had to walk to the hotel.
The hotel was nice and after a short shower we went out to have dinner. Our appointment was in the hotel hall to meet the German and the Turkish teachers; it was a pleasure for us to meet again Cengiz, Denis and Fatih that we already knew during the Italian meeting and to knew Tania and Benita, the German teachers.  At the restaurant we had a nice dinner with Mario, Sonia, Encar and the Spanish director and the food was really very good.
Monday, 4th of November

Breakfast at the hotel was a very huge one and I thought it was impossible to be on a diet that day, so I had some Spanish salami, some ham, some pieces of cake, and … it was enough for the first day. We took the underground to reach Cornellà. In Cornellà we started the  H.I.P. project activities with the introduction speech of the MAC headmaster. After that, all the students did some icebreaking activities: they introduced and talked about themselves, they had to describe their personality, they talked about stereotypes on our countries, they had to communicate in English and to socialize. It was really great to see how teenagers coming from different cultures and countries worked, studied, played, talked, joked, laughed all together without any problem, sharing their opinions, competences and experiences and getting to know each other … those were was the main purposes of the activities perfectly organized by the Spanish team.

In the afternoon, after a good lunch, we visited the marvellous Sagrada Familia. Outside the temple is wonderful, but inside it is still better if possible. Antonio Gaudí, the architect who projected this masterpiece was really an amazing dreamer and he left something unique in the world for humanity.

After that we visited a bit Barcelona and we started my students’ favourite sport: shopping! Actually I don’t like shopping, but it is nice to think on our families.
At night we had another nice dinner in a restaurant in Barcelona, I must admit I ate too much during the meeting.
Tuesday, 5th of November

Another day in Barcelona, students had to do a treasure hunt, walking through the Barrio Gótico and searching for some clues. It was not just tourism, students had to speak in English guided by their Spanish mates. Teachers had to walk and visit he Ramblas and other places near there. We entered the Boquería, the best market in Barcelona and we admired its magnificent colours and products in there. Then we walked through the oldest area of Barcelona with its narrow streets and medieval buildings, the cathedral and its square, the church of Santa María del Mar, the Municipality Palace and many other interesting places. I never get rid to visit Barcelona, every corner of this capital it’s a surprise for my eyes and its Modernism is really astonishing.

After lunch, we visited Gaudí’s Casa Batllò, in my opinion the best Gaudí’s house. He was really a modern genius and above all I appreciated the decorations and his main idea: to imitate Nature and its forms. In every room there is something amazing and you.

Here you have a video from the photos we made in Spain: HIPpies in Spain

Wednesday, 6th of December

It was the day of student’s presentations, every student should introduce her/his work and speak in English to explain what they have done. First af all they have some time to finish to prepare their work and to check that everything was fine. Then, they started to show their presentations.
Our students were very nervous because they had to speak in front of an audience, but they were very clever: they presented their work and I think they convinced many people to come and visit our Abruzzo!
After that we visited the old area of Cornellà which was a Roman Villa and there are still some ruins of it and some medieval buildings.
In the afternoon we made a very interesting visit at Citilab, which is a mix between a training center, a research center and an incubator for business and social initiatives. Actually, Citilab is a project started with the idea that digital technologies, above all Internet, are a way of innovation much more focused on citizens. It’s really out of the ordinary.
In the evening we had another great dinner in one of the restaurants near La Ramblas, Barcelona at night is still wonderful.

Thursday, 7th of November

It was a marvelous day, the sun was shining and it was really hot for November.
We had a walk to Montjuic and we could visit the hall of the Museo Nacional de Arte de Cataluña, there is a great panorama of Barcelona from there. After that we had a walk on that hill and we reached the funicular to go down to the beach. It was really warm and the see was calm, actually some people were having a bath there and many others were having a sunbathe.
Obviously, we had a good lunch in a restaurant in front of the beach and in the afternoon we visited again Barcelona, we never get tired of that. At night we had our last dinner in Cornellà, actually we went to a discobar were the Spanish team had organized a party for us. We listened to some good music played by some MAC students, we could dance and enjoy that party. At the end, we received our “Certificate of attendance” and each group said some farewell words. It is needless to say that many people started crying. We teachers were conscious that our work was satisfactory because many of the students were able to create a relation of friendship with people of many countries.

Friday, 8th of November

It was time to leave Cornellà and go back home had come. After the last huge breakfast at the hotel, Tania and I tried to share our photos, but it was impossible, I just had photos from the Turkish group.
We met at the Mac in Cornellà and had a farewell breakfast there with our friends.
We bought the last things just for the trip and to bring back home some delicious Spanish food.
It was difficult for all of us to leave our new friends, we were very sad and many of the girls just burst into tears and they stopped only when we left Barcelona. Sonia and the hosting girls came with us to the bus station; they danced for us for the last time there and we started our trip to home.
Going back means to leave someone, but we couldn’t wait to meet again our families and tell them what we did and who we met. It was time to start again our lives, but we will never forget such an experience.

Cornellà: second Coordinators' meeting

Coordinators´ Meeting in Barcelona 10- 13 June 2013
Minutes

10 June 2013

The coordinators decided on the following points:
Moodle should continue to be used as a common communication platform and for collecting material, files etc.
Evaluation of the programmes and results of previous meetings:
If there is no accommodation available with the families, the host country should suggest some possibilities for cheap accommodation and possibly provide a personal host student who takes care of a guest (solution in Poland ).
School masters should grant legal absence from school to all participating teachers so that they may assist the guests.
All in all coordinators (and students) found the past students´ meetings very successful.
The last meeting in the Czech Republic 2014
Czech colleagues will try to host 3-4 international students from each country in the host families to lessen the expenses for the guests.

11 June 2013
Intermediate Report
The Intermediate Report should be filled out according to the requirements of the National Agencies in each country.
If there are any problems or changes, they should be mentioned. For example, the procedure for finding project topics were changed during the meeting in Kings Lynn.
The Partnership activities can be taken from Tom´s draft.

Dissemination of the results
Every country is responsible for disseminating ongoing activities and results of the HIP project within the respective country (i.e. each school documents its activities on their home country website, in press, on TV, in the school journal, etc. ).

Because of the huge amount of information collected in the participating countries, it is difficult to gather it all on the HIP website. It would require a lot of time and technical expertise making it impossible to complete in a short period of time.

That is why the website of the HIP-Project should be considered a record for the FINAL REPORT, it has to reflect the application from the EU and is a common product of the results of all participating countries.
The website of the HIP project will contain only some general information about Comenius, the aims of this particular Comenius project and the participating schools. And there will be only links to each country’s school web site where all documentation about the activities can be found.  The school websites should be interconnected by links so you can begin with the HIP website, click on the link of Spain, for instance, look there for further details of Spanish activities and then from the Spanish website click on the link for the UK, for example UK, etc.
Sarka Kostkova from the CR could probably design the HIP website. (THAT WOULD BE GREAT!!!!) Sarka will have a look at the admin modus and will tell us whether she will be able to be the administrator.

Date of the third coordinators´ meeting in Poland
The date of the third coordinators´ meeting in Poland was set for 2-4 June 2014.
The core working hours (compulsory for everybody) are from 12.00 on the 2nd of June to 16.00 on the 4th of June. Please plan your travel according to the schedule.

On the 31 MARCH – 4 APR 2014 in the final project meeting in the Czech Republic the participating countries make summarizing presentations on the topics mentioned above.

12 June 2013
The coordinators team decided to create a common e-book.
The students of each country summarize their projects, describe what they did and where they were.

In order to keep the design of all e-books uniform,  students must have 2 pages (A4) at their disposal for this report and they may include 2 pictures. Sarka will tell us whether the pictures should be inside of the text or be sent separately as JPG (???) files.
In the first week of December Sarka is going to prepare the 3 layouts that can be used and she will send them to the coordinators (a special THANK YOU, Sarka!!). The teachers choose their favourite layout within a 2 week period.
We didn´t decide on anything for finishing of the e-book. We would like to suggest that students prepare their summarized reports for the e-book till the 1st of February. Sarka could complete the e-book until the meeting in the CR (31 MARCH – 4 APR 2014) if possible. Then we could show this e-book to the students during the final meeting.

During the last coordinators´ meeting in Poland from 2-4 June 2014, teachers will fill in the last common report for the respective National Agencies in each country.

Pescara: second project meeting in Italy - Rossella's report

Comenius Multilateral project 'HiP History in the Present)

Pescara report (11-15th March 2013)
By Ms. Rossella Cianci

The preparation  for this meeting began many weeks before our guest’s arrival! Mr. Bruno Garelli and I were both excited and a bit worried in deciding what activities would have best met our foreign friends’ approval and engagement. Moreover it took quite a long time to organise the work the students had to prepare for this meeting, that’s why we spent many afternoons at school! We had to share ideas, information and who was supposed to do what…. The students’ parents were involved too in order to be informed on the best way to welcome and put up the foreign teenage guests, particularly the ones with special needs.
Once the preparatory work was set, we were ready and eager to begin!

Sunday, 10 March the French and Polish delegations arrived in Pescara at 19:45 by coach from Rome. Everything went well with the Host-Guest matching and so we teachers could relax a bit waiting for the following days….

Monday, 11 March: The meeting at school started at 9:00. We all met at the school auditorium and two students welcomed the two delegations with Beethoven’s Hymn To Joy and a speech prepared by them.
All the teachers and students involved introduced themselves and after that we had a tour of our school. Ms. Elisabetta Bernabeo, the Deputy Headmaster,  and Mr. Kenneth Thomson our native English speaker,  welcomed our guests on behalf of our Principal.  At 11:00 we had a break with food and drinks prepared by the Italian host families.
Soon afterwards we saw a modern and revised version of Romeo and Juliet which was great fun.
Mr. Garelli organised a Class of Italian for our guests named 'How to survive in Pescara for a week'.
At 13:00 we left school and the students organised some activities by themselves.

19:30: The Turkish delegation arrived safe and sound in Pescara so that we were ready to officially open our days together!

Tuesday, 12 March: We met at school at 9:00 and as a first thing our Principal Mr. Angelo Lucio Rossi warmly welcomed everybody and made a speech with which underlined the importance of these projects, the chance to be in touch with people from abroad as a means to  better understand one another and to grow together beyond prejudices and stereotypes, accepting diversity as a precious opportunity to improve and look at the future with new eyes.
All the members of the  Turkish delegation introduced themselves and soon afterwards each country sang its own national anthem.
Before the break there was the presentation of the works prepared by the Italian students about our school, our city, our region and some monuments in the Chieti and Pescara provinces.
At 11:30, after eating and drinking something,  we all danced together some folk dances from Abruzzo ('saltarello' and 'quadriglia') and two dances from Apulia that have been  very fashionable all over Italy for some years,  'pizzica' and 'taranta'. We also organised a drama class and students learnt how to be more self confident and to challenge their shyness.
Bruno and I were glad because all the students took part to all the activities, always smiling and with great involvement. That was one of our first goals: to make each feel at ease, to give all the chance to make friends and to know one another.
After lunch, we all met at school once again and the Turkish, French and Polish delegations introduced their power-point presentations related to our common project and we learnt a lot about the culture, history, art and   schooling system of Poland, France and Turkey.
At the end of that very long day we tried to sing an Italian song which was the work of several artists after the terrible earthquake that stuck the city of L'Aquila in 2009. The most important and beautiful city in our region and home to the Abruzzo government underwent lots of sufferings because of this earthquake which caused many deaths, injuries and destruction. At 17:30 our day together came to an end and students organised some activities on their own for the evening.

Wednesday, 13 March
Our meeting point was Pescara Terminal Bus where we got on a private coach which led us to Ortona, la Costa dei Trabocchi, the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere and Lanciano.
The first stop was Ortona where we saw the Aragonese Castle, the Church of Santa Lucia and the Cathedral of San Tommaso. During our walking through Ortona we entered the Museo della Battaglia, a museum about the terrible days of World War II which saw Ortona involved in a bloody battle since it was one of the strategic cities lying on one of the major front lines. Students were struck after the speech made by a lady who told us of the sufferings the civilians had to bear. The museum is full of photographs, weapons, writings, documents which date back to those days.
Our next stop was San Giovanni in Venere, but while driving there we had the chance to admire the stunning coastline with its sandy and rocky beaches and with 'trabocchi', a sort of piles where fisherman used to  and still fish nowadays.
Once arrived at the Abbey, we visited it and explained something about its history and architecture and also saw the amazing view below it, since it is located on top of a hill. We stopped for lunch there and after eating we left for Lanciano. There we visited The Cathedral, Santa Maria del Ponte, Santa Maria Maggiore, the church of San Francesco, Montanare towers.  Unfortunately it began to rain even if  not a heavy one, luckily!
At 18:30 we go back to Pescara.

Thursday, 14 March
We visited the Town Hall and the building of the Province of Pescara with the famous painting The Daughter of Iorio  by Francesco Paolo Michetti.
Then we had a walk in Pescara Vecchia, the oldest part of the city, where you can find  Gabriele d' Annunzio's home  and  the anthropological museum Museo delle Genti d'Abruzzo,  housed in the old Borbonic jail . We went also to the 'bridge of the sea' near the harbour.
In the evening teachers and students met for a farewell pizza party, since the following day the French and Turkish delegations would leave Pescara.....

Friday, 15 March

At 7:00 we met at Pescara Terminal bus station. It was time to say goodbye to the Turkish and French groups. The students did not want their  guests to go away, they told the days spent together were really few and I even saw some mums weeping when the coach with our friends left.....
The Polish group remained one more day and at ten we met in the city centre and they had some free time to do their shopping.

After that week I felt a sort of emptiness, it seemed to me  all finished at once.  My colleague Bruno and I worked so hard in organising the many things we did, to prepare the students (that were perfect in welcoming their foreign friends and in all the tasks they had to carry on during the week). A special thank to the Italian families which put up the students from abroad as if they were their own children and to my colleagues who gave a precious hand in organising and taking part to the scheduled activities.
Last but not least, my compliments and my heartfelt thanks  to the French, Turkish and Polish teachers and students with whom we worked very well and made us feel always at ease.

Elisabetta's report on the Italian meeting (II)

Wednesday, 13th, we left for a trip southwards. We visited the town of Ortona with its churches, especially S. Tommaso, and the War Museum related to the second World War, since in this town there was a nightmarish battle because it lied on one of the front lines.
After Ortona we went to la Costa dei Trabocchi on the sea. Trabocchi are a kind of piles built quite close to the seashore and they were used  and built by fishermen in the past.
Our tour went on with the visit of the Abbey of S. Giovanni in Venere in Fossacesia, a stunning church with a monastery located on top of a hill,  which dates back to the XII century. After visiting the church and admiring the breathtaking view of the gulf of Venus, we stopped there for lunch.
In front of Pescara Town Hall
After eating we visited the town of Lanciano and, unfortunately, it started to rain.... By the way it was not such a heavy one and we entered its wonderful churches such as S. Maria del Ponte, S. Francesco and S.Maria Maggiore. I must confess that it was my first time there and it struck me a lot! Lovely day, definitely!
Thursday, 14th we met at school   and we took our guests to see "Pescara vecchia", the oldest part of our city and also to visit our Town Hall and The Province.

In the Province building
"La figlia di Iorio" room

In the afternoon, our last one before Alizée's departure (sob, sob), we went to buy some souvenirs and we got ready for the big pizza farewell  party alltogether. I felt very happy and also a bit proud in seeing how in a few days we managed to create such a close group! Our last night together finished at the disco where we danced a lot and had a great time.

Friday morning, 15th  it was time to say goodbye.... My mum drove us to the coach station where Alizée and the others took the bus back home. Before the coach left, we cried a lot and were desperate because we didn't want to separate. I was sure I had missed her so much!
By the way, I have already made arrangements with my new French friend and we are gong to be together this summer: I'm flying to France and she is coming back here! I'm dying to see her once again and to spend some time together!
This experience was fantastic, gorgeous, amazing! I did love being with foreign people, learning a lot from them, sharing our different experiences and finding a common ground to build new friendships!
THANKS, EVERYBODY!!!                                                                                                                          Love,

Elisabetta's report on the Italian meeting (I)

Dear diary,
I want to tell you all about my experience in the Comenius meeting .
Sunday evening, 10th March
BIG DAY  ARRIVED, AT LAST!!!  I went to the main coach station in Pescara to get the French girl I was putting up for the week. I was so excited!!!! Finally their coach from Rome arrived , I looked for her and once found, my mum and I welcomed her and went back home. Her name is Alizée, she is a 15 year old girl who lives in Bordeaux, France. She is so sweet!  We immediately got on well and it seemed as if we had known for ages....

The following morning, Monday 11th my new friend and I went to school to meet all the other students  and teachers involved in the project. I met the Polish and French group together with my Italian school mates, of course!

All the participants introduced themselves and after the salutations of the Deputy Headmaster,  we were ready to start!

We had many activities together and what surprised me was that everybody did everything with enthusiasm, always smiling and without any fear: It definitely amazed me!

We looked at some students performing some scenes from Romeo and Juliet  which had been reinterpreted by them, then we had a tour of the school, a buffet and after that we listened to one of the French teachers, Mr. Pascal Sore, who gave us some useful information on moodle and some tips on how to work with it: I had the chance to learn something really interesting!

Then the foreign guests had an Italian class "How to survive in Pescara for a week".
At one we left school and in the afternoon we went to Pescara centre with our guests. We went to the sea (shame for the weather that wasn't very nice), over the bridge and also shopping.
In the evening we had dinner with my family at home (my mum prepared special dishes for our beloved guest!).

Tuesday the 12th we were eager to meet the Turkish delegation which had arrived Monday evening in Pescara. Both the Turkish teachers and students introduced themselves, then our Haedmaster  welcomed all and officially opened our week together.

After that, each delegation sang its national anthem and it was great fun! it was nice to hear different languages that I had never heard before.

Soon afterwards the Italian students presented our works on the project related to our school, city, region and some Romanesque monuments in our area.

Together with three other students of my form we danced some folk dances from Abruzzo and I was so worried and a bit ashamed at the very beginning, but we had great success! Everybody was invited to join us and we danced all together.

How amusing! To finish, some other Italian students involved us in a theatre class and we had lots of fun, too.

After the break for lunch, in the afternoon we met at the school auditorium once again and the students from Turkey, France and Poland presented their power point works they had prepared for the project. They were very interesting and I followed all with great care.
The last activity we had togeher was to sing a song made by many Italian artists after the terrible earthquake which took place in 2009 in L'Aquila and its province. It was a terrible event for our region and we still have in our mind and our eyes the disaster and the deep sorrow of those days. This song was thought in order to help and collect some money for reconstruction.
We left school at about 17:30. In the evening we all went to play bowling.
Elisabetta
